A Dutch team, van Witteloostuijn, Haggiyannes, de Bree and Blom, published a systematic review in 2025 in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research. It looked at how adults at home talk with children aged 0 to 6 who have (or are suspected to have) a developmental language disorder (DLD), and how that talk relates to the children's language performance. Following PRISMA guidelines, the team included 67 articles and grouped parental language input into three areas: interaction (for example whether adults respond to the child and whether turns go back and forth), language itself (for example words and sentences), and conceptual content. 2. 研究見到咩關聯 | What links the review found

Most studies analysed audio or video from naturalistic parent-child play. Thirty-eight studies looked at the relationship between parental language input and children's language performance. Within the interactive dimension, parental responsiveness and turn-taking were positively associated with children's language performance. Sheer quantity of talk, by contrast, was not associated with those language outcomes, though the authors note that this observation still needs more replications.
The authors conclude that parents' responsive behaviours and the child's involvement in the exchange both matter, and they also point to gaps in the literature, including fewer studies on conceptual content. These are associations drawn from observational research. They do not prove that any one way of chatting always leads to any one result. [1]
Reading the findings with care

This review summarises associations reported across the literature. It does not say that certain ways of chatting "cause" stronger language performance, and it is not a way to judge any individual child. Most included samples came from families outside Hong Kong, and recording settings and measurement tools varied. Cantonese-speaking homes and Hong Kong caregiving patterns (for example when a domestic helper or grandparents share care) may differ, so the findings are a reference only. The authors also note that the "quantity of talk showed no association" point still needs more studies before it can be stated more firmly. [1]
Small things Hong Kong parents can notice
喺 CRP(Communication, Relationship, Parenting)嘅角度,先建立一來一往嘅關係,再慢慢豐富語言,往往比淨係追求「講得多、講得啱」更容易令雙方放鬆。

Many Hong Kong parents work hard at "teaching talk": talking nonstop, asking many questions, or asking the child to repeat. This review is a reminder that what relates more clearly to children's language performance may not be how much adults say, but whether adults wait, pick up the child's expression, and respond in turn.
In everyday moments such as building blocks, mealtimes or car rides, try going a little slower and leaving space for the child to answer with a sound, a gesture or a single word. When the child speaks, follow their topic rather than rushing to correct. Busy families who share care with a domestic helper or grandparents can also share this "one turn, then another" rhythm.
From a CRP (Communication, Relationship, Parenting) point of view, building a back-and-forth relationship first, then gradually enriching the language, often feels easier than chasing "more talk" or "perfect talk" alone. The research is a reference only, and every child has their own pace. If a child's language development remains a lasting worry, parents can ask the school, kindergarten or a relevant service unit.
