What the study looked at

English

Ali and Bougoure (joint first authors), with Cooper, Quinton, Tan, Brett, Mandy, Maybery, Magiati and Happé, published an open-access systematic review in December 2025. Using thematic synthesis, they gathered how autistic people understand and experience “autistic burnout.” They included 48 studies (30 qualitative, 7 quantitative, 11 mixed methods), covering about 4,000 autistic participants. Samples mostly involved White women, people who learned of their autistic identity later in life, and adults with at least average language and cognitive ability. [1]

What links the review found

English

Participants often described burnout as extreme exhaustion and a drop in day-to-day coping, sometimes lasting a long time and mixed with intermittent crises. Sensory and social overload, long-term camouflaging, social ignorance and stigma, everyday life pressure, and difficulty recognising one’s own emotions were associated with burnout. Burnout was also negatively associated with physical and mental wellbeing, community participation, and hope for the future.

Factors linked with recovery included a self-understanding framework closer to one’s own experience, meeting needs for rest, solitude and sensory relief, and personal and community support. These are lived patterns and associations from the literature, not a claim that every autistic person has the same experience, and not proof that any one practice always leads to any one outcome. [1]

Reading the findings with care

English

This review maps how autistic people describe burnout and which factors tend to appear alongside it. It does not prove that any one cause necessarily produces burnout, and it does not prove that any one form of rest necessarily leads to any one outcome. The authors note limited representation: samples often lean Western, White, female, and later-identified adults; voices with higher support needs and from more varied cultural backgrounds remain under-represented. Hong Kong’s school pressure and family expectations differ, so the findings are a reference only. This article does not blame burnout on personal “laziness” or “not trying hard enough”; the focus is environmental load, pace and space to rest. [1]

Small things Hong Kong parents can notice

喺 CRP(Communication, Relationship, Parenting)嘅角度,耗竭相關嘅對話本身就牽涉溝通同關係:肯慢慢傾「邊度負荷太重、邊度可以鬆啲」,先較容易一齊搵到休息同理解嘅空間。

English

Many Hong Kong parents notice older children or young people who suddenly seem to “crash”: they just about manage school and social demands, then after holidays or public exams they feel too exhausted to move, more sensitive, and unable to lift energy even for things they usually enjoy. This review reminds us that such a state is not always “laziness” or “weak will.” It is often associated with long adaptation to an environment that understands them poorly, sensory and social load, and long periods of “acting normal.” Parents can talk together: when is the exhaustion heaviest? Which spaces, pace and sensory settings help rest? Is it worth reducing unnecessary social performance so energy remains for what matters? Schools and transition services can discuss reasonable adjustments and rest rhythms, rather than only asking someone to “hold on.” Most samples are Western adults; Hong Kong is a reference only.

From a CRP (Communication, Relationship, Parenting) point of view, burnout-related talk itself is about communication and relationship: when people keep talking about where the load is too heavy and where things could ease, it becomes easier to find rest and understanding together. The research is a reference only. Every young person has their own pace. If low mood continues, day-to-day coping drops sharply, or thoughts of self-harm appear, call 999 or the 24-hour Mental Health Support Hotline 18111.
