From Teaching to Guiding: Learning to Leave Some Space
I used to talk too much
After walking this road with parents for so long, there have been times I thought I was doing the right thing, only to realise later that I wasn't.
Back then I assumed that parents came to me wanting answers quickly. So when I talked with them, I often took a teaching approach. As soon as I saw a problem, I wanted to give the answer and the method straight away, and I would say a lot. Afterwards I would feel I had given plenty and helped. But gradually I realised I was wrong. I was saying far too much. Looking back now, I can see why: when I said too much, parents had no room left to think, and those methods were mine, not something they had worked out for themselves.
Guiding: leaving room to think
What I should have been doing was guiding, and letting parents think things through for themselves.
Over time I came to understand that guiding is a really important way of working. Ask a question, then pause, wait, and give people room to think it over. Whether it is a parent or a child, something they work out themselves feels very different from something they are told. I feel it makes a real difference to how they use their minds and how they come to understand things.
Guiding doesn't mean saying nothing. It means saying less, listening more and waiting longer. For example, instead of saying "This is what you should do," I might ask, "What do you think your child was trying to tell you then?" and then quietly wait for the parent to think it through. Sometimes the wait is long, and sometimes the answer is different from the one in my head, but that answer belongs to them.
A parent who is still walking with us
Whenever I think about change, I think of one parent in particular. They are still by our side today, walking with us.
This parent didn't only change themselves. They also changed their child, and even changed the whole atmosphere at Mars CRP Academy. They have been there helping all along, have since become one of our tutors at the academy, and continue to influence us to this day.
Every time I see them, I remind myself that parents already carry great strength. My job is not to say more, but to leave more room.
Don't go it alone
If you are just starting out on this road, there is only one thing I want to tell you:
"Don't go it alone."
We need to be a group of people supporting one another. Raising a child is a long road, and walking it alone wears you out. Don't hide away and try to do it all by yourself. With others walking beside you, the road becomes much easier. Those walking with you could be another parent, a group of friends learning together, or someone close whom you trust. Share with each other and cheer each other on, and you will find you are not alone.
