因為我都係過來人|Why I Left I.T.: Because I Had Been There Too
A group of students who couldn't study
做緊 I.T.
People often ask me why someone who worked in I.T. would end up spending his time with young people and their parents. I have thought about it for a long time, and the answer is actually simple: it was because of a group of secondary school students.
While I was still working in I.T., I met many secondary students with ADHD. Not one or two, but a whole group of them. They had one thing in common: they couldn't get their studying done. The books were in front of them, the homework was in front of them, the exams kept coming one after another, but the studying just would not go in.
Because I walked that road myself
Why did this matter so much to me? Because when I was at school, I was just like them.
I have been there. I know that feeling well: it isn't that you don't want to study, but you can't sit still and nothing you read seems to stay. The people around you may not understand, and you may not be able to explain why yourself. So when I saw these students, I wasn't looking at them as an outsider. It was like seeing my younger self again.
Not being able to study is often about more than marks. Over time, a child may start to feel they are just not good enough, and stop believing in themselves. I didn't want them to see themselves that way.
Hang on, that's not right"
As I spent time with them, I found myself thinking, "Hang on, that's not right." It wasn't that they couldn't study. They just hadn't found the way that worked for them yet. And having walked that road myself, I realised I had some ways that could help them actually study.
That was the moment a thought began to grow in me: I want to help these young people. Everything that came after started from that thought. As for the ways I used, I will share them here bit by bit over time.
It wasn't that I wanted a change; it was that I saw them
So whenever someone asks me why I changed careers, this is my answer: it wasn't because I was tired of I.T., and it wasn't part of some long-term plan. It was because I saw a group of young people who needed help, and I happened to have walked the same road.
If I hadn't met them back then, I might still be sitting in front of a computer today. But once I had seen them, it was hard to pretend I hadn't.
What I'd like parents to know
If you have a child at home for whom studying is a real struggle, I would like to say this: not being able to study today does not mean they never will, and it does not mean they aren't trying hard enough. It may simply be that they haven't yet found a path that suits them. The first step may not be making them sit at the desk for longer, but sitting down with them and listening to how they describe it: which part is hardest, and when is it hardest?
I am someone who walked that road step by step myself. That is why I truly believe every child deserves someone to walk alongside them while they slowly find their own way.
