Seeing Our Children from Another Angle: The Treasure Beneath the Iceberg
Every child has their own character
After all these years with children and parents, the thing I believe most is this: every child has their own character. Our job is to find their strengths.
That is easy to say and not so easy to do. Faced with homework, rules and big feelings every day, it is only natural that the first thing we notice is what our children can't do. But if that is all we look at, our children may slowly come to believe that is all they are.
What photography taught me
I love taking photos, and I especially like crouching down to shoot small things from a low angle.
Photography works like this: if we always stand in the same spot and only stare at the flaw, never changing our angle, then all we will ever see is the flaw. But if we are willing to crouch down and turn a little, we often find there is so much beauty in the picture that was there all along.
Sometimes a tiny flower looks quite ordinary when you look down at it standing up. Crouch a little lower, and the background becomes a whole blue sky, and the picture is completely different. The flower hasn't changed. What changed is where we are looking from.
It is the same with our children.
Beneath the iceberg
Children are like icebergs. What we see is often only the small part above the water, the problems on the surface. Those problems are real, but they are not the whole child.
But below the water there is so much more that hasn't been brought out yet: their strengths, their good qualities, their talents. These won't float up by themselves. We need to be willing to change our angle, look slowly, and dig gently.
For example, a child who can never sit still might, from another angle, be full of energy and curiosity. A child who holds on tightly to how things should be might, from another angle, be especially focused and careful. A problem and a strength can sometimes be two sides of the same thing.
我哋要去發掘 | It is up to us to discover
That is why I often tell parents not to look only at the surface. Tonight, try thinking about it: what are your child's strengths? When are they most absorbed and most happy? Their talent may well be right there. It doesn't need to be big; a small thing is fine. Write it down, or say it to someone at home. Discovering this doesn't happen in a day. It may take many times slowing down and many changes of angle. But every time you see it, it is worth it.
There is a line I love: "Even the smallest flower can set off the widest sky." Every child is like that. As long as we are willing to change our angle, we will see how beautiful they really are.
