What the study looked at

Cheung, Kang and Wong from the Department of Social Work at Hong Kong Baptist University published an open-access systematic review and meta-analysis in January 2026 in European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. The work maps "multisystemic resilience factors" for children and adolescents with ADHD: personal capacities and supportive environments around them, and how these link with different life outcomes. [1]
What the review found

After searching six databases, the team included 28 eligible articles covering 11,622 children aged 18 or under.
The review found that intrapersonal factors (for example cognitive functioning, emotion regulation, academic skills, social skills, proactive attitudes, and prosocial behaviour) and interpersonal factors (for example positive parenting and attachment, parental resources, peers, and other support networks) each link with educational outcomes, wellbeing, relationships, and internalising / externalising related indicators. Most links were "specific factor to specific outcome". For example, cognitive and academic skills showed clearer positive links with educational outcomes; friendship, prosocial behaviour, social skills and positive parenting linked positively with relationship outcomes; emotion regulation and peer / other adult support linked with lower externalising / internalising related indicators. The authors note that most existing literature comes from Western samples, and cultural differences may shape which kinds of support matter more. These are pooled associations from observational work. They do not prove that any single factor will bring a particular result. [1]
Reading the findings with care
English
This is a systematic review and meta-analysis. It uses existing quantitative studies to describe which resilience factors link with which outcomes. The authors also propose a conceptual model that stresses outcome-specific links, multisystemic factors, circular feedback, and socio-cultural influence. Most included studies come from Western samples, often with White as the main ethnicity reported. Hong Kong home pace, multi-generation care and school support differ from those settings, so the findings are a reference only. Do not assume that strengthening one area will lift every area. [1]
Small things Hong Kong parents can notice
English
Hong Kong parents of children with special needs often hear "not enough focus" or "the behaviour needs to change", and less often "which resources are already helping". This review from a local university team is a reminder that what the literature links with better outcomes includes not only personal skills, but also warm parent–child relationships, parents' own resources, friends, and other adult support.
In everyday life, you could list with the school the "helpers" your child already has (for example a trusted teacher, a steady interest buddy, or the person at home who listens most easily), rather than only a problem list. Look separately at schoolwork, emotions and the friend circle. Make use of the grandparent and relative care networks common in Hong Kong, while keeping in mind the authors' note that roles of family versus community support may differ between Eastern and Western settings; overseas findings are a reference only.
From a CRP (Communication, Relationship, Parenting) point of view, you can start with communication and relationship: adults and the child talk through who and what is already holding them up, keep a predictable rhythm, and do not demand every area change at once. The research is a reference only. Every family and school has its own pace, and there is no need to blame yourself or your child. If stress is already disrupting daily family life, you can check with the school, a parent group, or a relevant service unit.
