Jia, Zhuang and colleagues from the Department of Social Work at Hong Kong Baptist University, together with a team from Jinan University, published an open-access meta-analysis in July 2026 in BMC Psychology. The work maps risk and protective factors linked with "family resilience" in families of autistic children. Following PRISMA, the team searched six English-language databases and two Chinese-language databases, with PROSPERO registration CRD42024595923. [1]
What the review found

The meta-analysis included 41 studies covering about 15,817 caregivers.
Interpersonal-level factors showed stronger overall links with family resilience: family cohesion had a pooled correlation of about r = 0.70, family quality of life about r = 0.59, and social support about r = 0.39. At the personal level, parents' sense of capability in caregiving showed a clearer positive link with family resilience (about r = 0.51). Parenting stress (about r = −0.46) and uncertainty about the autistic presentation (about r = −0.43) linked with lower family resilience. The authors note that most included studies were cross-sectional, so the findings describe associations rather than cause and effect, and that some factors showed high heterogeneity, so reading should stay careful. These are pooled associations from observational work. They do not prove that any single factor will bring a particular result. [1]
Reading the findings with care

This is a meta-analysis. It uses existing quantitative studies to describe which factors link with family resilience. The authors also propose a multi-level framework for thinking about interpersonal and personal factors together. Most samples were mothers, so fathers and other caregivers may not share the same pattern. Hong Kong home pace, multi-generation care and school support differ from many study settings, so the findings are a reference only. Do not assume that strengthening one area will hold every pressure. [1]
Small things Hong Kong parents can notice
喺 CRP(Communication, Relationship, Parenting)嘅角度,可以先由「溝通」同「關係」入手:屋企人一齊講清楚邊個負責邊樣日常,保留可預知嘅節奏,而唔係一次過要求樣樣都變。

Hong Kong families of children with special needs often feel they have to carry everything alone. This meta-analysis, with a local university team involved, is a reminder that what the literature links more strongly with "a family that can hold" is often not only personal willpower, but how aligned the household is, family quality of life, and support beyond the home.
In everyday life, you could keep a small ritual such as one shared meal or a weekly family walk, and use that time to talk about who helps with what, rather than only how hard the child is finding things. You can tell relatives or a parent group plainly that the need is for the whole household to take turns, not that one person is "not strong enough". When mixed information raises more uncertainty, favour a trusted source and a fixed contact person, and cut down rumour and blame.
From a CRP (Communication, Relationship, Parenting) point of view, you can start with communication and relationship: household members talk through who owns which daily tasks, keep a predictable rhythm, and do not demand every area change at once. The research is a reference only. Every family has its own pace, and there is no need to blame yourself or other people at home. If stress is already affecting sleep or daily family life, you can check with the school, a parent group, or a relevant service unit.
