What the study looked at

English

A research team at Bond University's School of Psychology published a systematic review in June 2024. It looked at the link between contact with nature and school-aged children with ADHD. The team searched four academic databases and, from about nine hundred papers, kept seven studies that met their criteria, from the United States, New Zealand, Germany, the Netherlands and mainland China. [1]

How the studies worked

English

These seven studies used quite different methods. Some used satellite images to estimate how much greenery was near a child's home or school. Some asked parents where the child usually played. Others arranged short walks in a park, an urban area or a residential neighbourhood, then compared how the children did on attention tasks. [1]

What links the review found

English

Across the studies, the direction of findings was broadly similar. Children who spent more time in green settings, or who lived or went to school near more greenery, tended to show milder attention-related challenges linked with ADHD. In one small U.S. study, children did better on a short attention task after a 20-minute walk in a park than after a walk in an urban area. A mainland China study of nearly 60,000 children aged 2 to 17 found that more greenery within 500 metres of a school or kindergarten was associated with fewer ADHD-related patterns. Children themselves often rated parks and woods as more fun and more relaxing than built settings. In some studies, the link remained after age, sex and household income were taken into account. [1]

Reading the findings with care

English

The authors are clear about the limits. There were only seven studies. Most were observational. Many relied on parent reports, and studies defined "nature" in different ways. So the review can talk about links, not about proof that nature always brings a particular change, and it cannot yet say how much time outdoors is needed. Every family is different; research is a direction to consider, not a measuring stick. [1]

Small steps for Hong Kong parents

喺 CRP(Communication, Relationship, Parenting)嘅角度,一齊去公園唔單止係「出去玩」,亦係一段家長同孩子一齊留意身邊事物、互相傾兩句嘅時間。

English

Hong Kong is dense, and many families live in packed urban areas, yet country parks, waterfront promenades and estate podium gardens are often not far away. Outdoor green space can be a simple, low-cost part of everyday life. You might try:

  • After school or at the weekend, take a short walk in a nearby park, notice trees and birds, or run about on the grass

  • Before homework, step outside for ten minutes, then sit down again with a change of scene

  • Put a few plants by a window so there is some green to look at at home

  • Keep the focus on the child feeling happy and at ease, not on adding another chore

From a CRP (Communication, Relationship, Parenting) point of view, a park visit is not only "going out to play". It can also be time for parent and child to notice things together and exchange a few words. Research only shows links. Green space does not replace the views of a qualified professional. If you are worried about your child's attention or mood, talk with a school teacher or a qualified professional.
