A Canadian team (Locke, Stone, So, Sheriko, Arbour-Nicitopoulos, Brussoni and Moore) published a scoping review and narrative synthesis in April 2026 in BMC Public Health. It gathers research on how children and young people with disabilities (about 0 to 24 years old) experience outdoor play and "risky play", which here means play with a little challenge and room to explore. The search strategy was built with a librarian, six databases were searched, several reviewers screened the records, and the findings were organised with the socioecological model, which looks at the individual, family, community and policy levels. The review was registered with OSF. [1]

What the review found

The review included 69 articles, which varied widely in study design, location and type of disability. Many articles looked at outdoor play, while only a few looked at risky play. The articles described definitions, types, children's preferences and the benefits of these kinds of play. They also reported barriers and facilitators at every level of the socioecological model, so the child, the family, the community, the play space and policy can each hold participation back or help it along.

The background notes that outdoor and risky play are associated with physical, cognitive, social and emotional health and wellbeing, that all children have the right to play, and that children with disabilities are not taking part enough. The authors conclude that these children and the adults who support them show real resilience in getting past many barriers in order to play. They call for more work at the policy level, and for children and their supporters to have more autonomy in deciding how they take part, so that participation can be of good quality. This is a summary of existing literature. It does not show that any one play space or type of play always leads to any one result. [1]

Reading the findings with care

English

This is a scoping review. Its aim is to map what the existing literature covers. It does not compare which approach works better, and it is not about cause and effect. "Risky play" does not mean encouraging danger. It means giving children some room to explore on their own while adults hold a safe baseline. Most included studies come from outside Hong Kong, where housing density, park design and community culture may differ, so the findings are a reference only. [1]

Small things Hong Kong parents can notice

Public space in Hong Kong is tight, and playgrounds and estate facilities do not always work well for every child. Parents of children with special needs sometimes feel that "going out is such a hassle, staying home is safer". This review is a reminder that play is not an extra. It is part of every child's rights, and many of the hurdles come from play spaces, information, community attitudes and policy support rather than from parents not trying hard enough.

In everyday life, you could pick a park with flatter ground, some shade and places to sit, and start with a short visit. Before heading out, choose together with your child what to try today, such as the swings, the sandpit or walking up a gentle slope. Adults hold the safe baseline, while leaving a little room for the child to try things on their own. Going with another family in a similar situation means you can look out for each other. If a play space is hard to use, you can raise the need for inclusive play with your estate management office, the district leisure services or the school.

From a CRP (Communication, Relationship, Parenting) point of view, playing outside together is itself communication and relationship: the child chooses, the adult stays alongside, and confidence that "I can try" grows step by step. The research is a reference only. Every family has its own pace, and there is no need to push yourself or your child to do it all at once.
